Sharon Walker Obituary

Sharon Lee Powers Walker, 73, of Rexburg, died Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at her home of natural causes.

She was born Feb. 22, 1940, the eldest daughter of Robert Jolly Powers and Bernice Mildred Hamm. As a youth, Sharon spent a lot of time with her siblings, fishing and camping on the South Fork of the Salmon River and at Lowman, Idaho.

Sharon graduated from Boise High School in 1958. She earned an associate degree from Boise State University, graduating with honors. In 1962, Sharon graduated in zoology from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. At BYU, she was also an outstanding student. She was a student instructor in human anatomy and physiology. She was also the lab instructor of several pre-med courses at BYU.

While at BYU, Sharon met and married John Davies Walker on Sept. 12, 1961. They were married for 48 years. To this marriage was born three children: Jonathan, Suzanne and Michael.

After a couple of years, Sharon and John moved to Holiday, Utah, where they both taught at brand new junior high schools -- Sharon at Church Hill in the Granite District and John at Butler in the Jordan District. Later they moved to Champaign-Urbana, Ill., so John could complete his graduate work at Ohio State University. They then moved to Ricks College in Rexburg.

They arrived in Rexburg three days prior to the collapse of the Teton Dam on June 6, 1976. They had 8 feet of water in their home west of Rexburg. They pitched in on the cleaning and rebuilding effort. This challenge provided a great opportunity to meet many wonderful people who became lifelong friends.

She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held a variety of callings and loved to serve the people around her. In her later years, she had many health problems that prevented her from serving as much as she would have desired.

She had many friends with whom she shared her many kindnesses in the form of food, crafts, gifts and a listening ear. She has been an exceptional daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her husband, John of Rexburg; a son, Michael (Romayne) Walker of Rexburg; a daughter, Suzanne (Bo) Blaze of Maywood, N.J.; two grandchildren, Zachary James Walker and Daniel Powers Walker; and two sisters, Peggy (Mike) Hoobler and Joanne (Lynn) Poole.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Jonathan Harper Walker; and a sister, Judy Powers.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 23, at the Hibbard LDS Chapel, with Bishop Kyle Kinghorn officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church prior to services. Interment will be in Holiday Memorial Cemetery in Holiday, Utah.

May God be with your families and friends during this passing of such a great person. I am glad we were able to visit with her when she came to Boise to pay her respect for my Mother a couple of September's back.

We were shocked to hear of Sharon's passing. I guess I'm still of the mind that we will all go on forever. We shared many happy times growing up together as you can probably tell from the photo that Linda shared. I remember the photo, we still have a copy, from Sagehen Reservoir early 1950's.
Rest in Peace,

I am so shocked and saddened to have learned of Sharon's passing. She was the oldest of my gang of cousins, and I have many wonderful memories of our families going camping on the South Fork of the Salmon River. Our father's were the best of friends and were both champion catcher's of the big "Sams". We would all run up & down the river, throwing rocks in-probably much to out Father's dismay. I remember Sharon laughing at all of us younger cousins.I am attaching one of my favorite pictures of all of us. Sharon is the one holding my baby brother Mike.
