Sherrill Vance Obituary

Sherrill Dean Vance, 82, currently living in St. Anthony, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, of incidents related to age.

Sherrill was born March 11, 1931, in Stanford, Mont., to Hyrum Golden and Arleen Alta Vance. He had three brothers and three sisters: Alta, Dale, Neil, Kemmer, Coreen and Doris. He lived in Stanford before moving to Bynum, Mont., and then moving to the Fairfield Bench, where he entered the Crow School and graduated from Fairfield High School in 1949. He attended Montana State College in Havre, Mont.

He joined the Marine Corps Reserve in 1949. He completed basic training at Camp Pendleton in California. Upon returning from basic training, he was called to serve during the Korean War. He was awarded a Purple Heart after being wounded in action.

Sherrill married Lorna June Walker on Aug. 5, 1953, in the Idaho Falls Temple.

He attended school at Ricks College and completed a master's degree from Utah State University. He taught industrial arts for 35 years, losing only one finger in shop class, and survived countless driver education students. Although he spent many years in the classroom, he especially enjoyed raising livestock. After retirement, he taught at the St. Anthony work camp and was a life skills coach at Upper Valley Industries.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in which he faithfully served in many callings and assignments.

He is survived by Lorna, his wife of 60 years; his sons, Kolin (Jackie) and Tevis (Lisa); his daughters, Holly (Mark) Kartchner and Margo (Brent) Thompson; and the light of his life, 14 grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, a sister and a granddaughter.

Funeral services will be at noon Saturday, Dec. 14, at the St. Anthony 2nd Ward/Twin Groves 2nd Ward Chapel. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Saturday prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery in Idaho Falls under the direction of Bert Flamm Mortuary.

Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.flammfh.com.
