He was born June 12, 1927, in Bates, Idaho, to George C. Furniss and Sarah Ann Nelson. He was raised and attended schools in the Teton Basin and attended Teton High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific.

Ted worked as a heavy-equipment operator for the INL for many years.

Ted was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; he was also a member of the VFW and DAV, the Operating Engineers Union and the American Quarter Horse Association. He was an avid horseman and was inducted in the Eastern Idaho Horseman's Hall of Fame in 1998. He taught pony and horse driving with the 4-H club for 40 years.
