POUGHKEEPSIE - Alexander V. "Sam" LaPenna 96 , known to his family as "Uncle Sam" passed away on January 28, 2013 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, with his loving family by his side.

Uncle Sam gave his wisdom to his family, but only when he was asked. The biggest inspiration and teaching to all of us was the way he lived his life.

Sam and his four sisters Antoinette, Yolanda, Rose and Laura were all baptized at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Poughkeepsie.

Mr. LaPenna was a longtime resident of Poughkeepsie and was a previous resident of Manhattan, NY and Fort Lauderdale Florida.

Mr. LaPenna was a life member of the Italian Center in Poughkeepsie. He was one of the original founders and members of the club. He was also a member of Dutchess Golf and Country Club where he was an avid golfer, the Shamrock Club, the NY Athletic Club and the B.P.O.Elks Club #275 all located in Poughkeepsie. He was also a devoted member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Poughkeepsie.

Sam attended local public schools. He graduated from Poughkeepsie High school and the Poughkeepsie Business Institute. He then went on to graduate from Fordham University and St. John's Law School. He was admitted to practice Law in the State of New York.

Mr. LaPenna enlisted as an Aviator Cadet in the United States Army Air Corps. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lietenant and served in the 92nd bomb group as a member of the 8th Air Force. He was shot down and interred as a prisoner of war in Switzerland. After active and reserved dutyhe was discharged as a Captain in the United States Air Force Reserves.

He retired from the construction machinery sales business and joined a construction company in South America as a legal counsel and managing partner. After several years he returned to Poughkeepsie and joined a company which specialized in road buiding,housing and land development. He continued in that business until his retirement in 1995.

Mr. LaPenna was born in Poughkeepsie, NY on May 19, 1916. He was the son of Angelo and Gertrude DiRosa LaPenna, who were immigrants from Italy.

Survivors include his sisters; Antoinette LaPenna of Poughkeepsie and Yolanda Nails of San Jose California. Additional survivors include his nieces; Jean Boshart, Gertrude Pelish, Alexandra Sullivan and her husband Kevin, Toni Marie Robe and her husband Rolf, her nephews; Ronald Levine and his wife Jean, Larry Levine and his wife Nancy, Arnold Levine, Thomas Levine and his wife Robyn, James Radcliffe and his wife Meg , Michael Nails and his wife Debbie and 33 grand nieces and nephews.

Mr. LaPenna was predeceased by his sisters; Rose Radcliffe and Laura Levine.

There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday February 2nd 9:30am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Poughkeepsie.

Burial will follow at St. Peters Cemetery in Poughkeepsie with military honors.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Dr. Victor A. Bacile Scholarship Fund in care of the Italian Center 227 Mill St. Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 or a , in the memory of Mr. Alexander V. LaPenna.
