Beacon - Charles J. Oris, Sr., a lifelong Beacon resident, passed away on Monday, February 24, 2014 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie. He was 94.
Born in Beacon on July 13, 1919 Charles was the son of John and Helen Halchik Oris. He was a graduate of St. John's School Class of 1933. Charles married the former Marie L. Tabone. Mrs. Oris predeceased Charles in 2010. Charles proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He worked as a security guard for IBM in East Fishkill. He was a parishioner of St. Joachim - St. John the Evangelist Church, a fifty year member of Mase Hook and Ladder Company, a member of the Newburgh Bowling Association, inducted into the Mid Hudson Bowling Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Beacon Classic League Hall of Fame, a member of Beacon Senior Citizen League and former member of the Southern Dutchess Country Club and Beacon Elks. Charles was an avid sportsman, enjoying golf, fast pitch softball and bowling.
Charles is survived by his children, Charlene M. Fisher and her husband, Harold of Denton, TX, Sandra A. Fitzgerald and her husband, Tom of Beacon and Charles J. Oris, Jr. of Beacon; his grandchildren, Peter Fisher and Suzanne M. Davis; his great grandchildren, Bailey and Avery Davis; a great niece, Lori Frohnhoefer.
In addition to his wife, Charles was predeceased by his brother, John Oris, Sr. and his wife, Emily and his nephew, John Oris, Jr. and his wife, Jean.
The family will receive their friends on Friday, February 28, 2014 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Halvey Funeral Home, Inc., 24 Willow Street, Beacon.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 1 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Joachim Cemetery, 301 Washington Avenue, Beacon.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Charles may be made to VA Hudson Valley Health Care System, Castle Point Campus, Castle Point, New York 12511.
