Hyde Park - Donald J. Vona, 82, lifelong area resident, died peacefully at home on Monday, October 28, 2013.
Born July 25, 1931 in Poughkeepsie, he was the son of the late Samuel and Mary C. Simmons Vona.
He proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and completed several tours on
the historic ships USS Hornet (CVA-12) and Salerno Bay (CVE-110).
He started his career in 1956 as a tool and dye maker at Schatz Federal Bearing, where he worked until it closed in 1981. He then worked for IBM in Poughkeepsie for many years until his retirement.
He was an avid collector of antiques, especially military memorabilia. He also enjoyed fishing and cooking for his family.
Survivors include his three beloved daughters, Tammy and her ex-husband, Kevin Kelly, of Hyde Park, Kimberly Vona Pittman, of Oviedo, FL, and Taryn Vona and her husband, Andrew Johnston, of Albany. Don had four grandchildren he adored: Samara Kelly of Los Angeles, CA, Jenna Kelly of Hyde Park, and Jordan and Sierra Vona of Oviedo, Florida. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Elwell and husband, Bob, of Hyde Park; and niece, Marleen Whiteley of Sweden, and his former wives Nancy Baillie of El Paso, TX and Donna Braatz Engle of Poughkeepsie.
In addition to his parents, Don was predeceased by his brother, Joseph Tompkins.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be no calling hours. A Funeral Service will be at 11 am, Saturday, November, 2nd at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
Burial with military honors will follow in the veteran's section of Rhinebeck Cemetery.
