Poughkeepsie - Elisa Rodriguez Gonzalez known affectionately to her family as "Echa" was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on November 15, 1910. She transitioned peacefully into eternal rest July 2, 2014 at the age of 103 years young.
Elisa had 12 brothers and sisters who she often spoke of and loved dearly. She came by ship to the United States in the late 1940's with her husband Emilio Gonzalez. She worked as a seamstress for many years in Brooklyn, NY where she lived until moving to the Hudson Valley area. She raised many of her brothers and sisters over the years as well as helped them transition from Puerto Rico (PR) to the United States. In 1962 Elisa and her husband took on the responsibility of raising one of her brother's children, John Rodriguez, who lost his mother at a young age, and raised him as her son. She retired in the late 1970's and was an active member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (ILGWU).
During recent conversations with John, Echa reflected on all she had seen and heard in her 103 years. She spoke of seeing her first car in PR, seeing the Statue of Liberty from the ship she was on before landing on the soil that would flourish her American dreams, buying her first black and white television, saying goodbye to her family members who served in World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam. She remembered Martin Luther King Jr., Robert and John F Kennedy, the first man to walk the moon and smiled when she thought of the first black president of the United States. She was a God-fearing, strong, independent, courageous woman who always helped others. Elisa loved dancing and everything about the Puerto Rican culture. She will be missed and remembered for her patience and gentle smile.
She is survived by her son John Rodriguez, Sr. and his wife Valeria; her grandchildren, Brendan, Johnny, Sahan, India Rodriguez and a great grandchild Araya Rodriguez. She is also survived by a brother, Juan Rodriguez and her spiritual daughter, Felicia Watson and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She will also be missed by the great staff and friends at River Valley Nursing Home where she lived for the past six years.
