Cannava, EdD

DOVER, DE - Dr. Ernest J. Cannava, EdD, age 76, of Camden, passed away June 25, 2012 at Bayhealth Medical Center in Dover.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Joseph and Vera (Marro) Cannava. Dr. Cannava attended high school at St. John's Prep in Brooklyn, NY, where he went on to become a football star. He later went on to attain his Doctorate from Utah State University, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Cannava honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps and was known as a proud veteran. Dr. Cannava had worked as a teacher and Junior High Principal in New York and went on to become Superintendant of Schools in New York and New Jersey. He had received awards and honors, too numerous to list, in Education, and had work written into the Congressional Record of New York State. He was also a member of the Rotary Club. Upon moving to the Dover area in 2005, he was an active member of Holy Cross Church. Dr. Cannava was a man of diverse interests and accomplishments, as he was an avid hunter and gun collector, a member of the Walton Mountain Hunting Club in Walton, NY, an outstanding tennis, handball, and racquetball player, and an avid New York Jets fan. In his quieter moments he cherished the company of his family. Dr. Cannava will be remembered for the contributions to his community, and he will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched.

Dr. Cannava is survived by his devoted wife, Margarita M. Cannava, of Camden, DE; two loving daughters, D'Arcy V. Goldman and husband Howard J. Goldman, of Boston, MA, and Donna M. Scott and husband Charles H. Scott, of Wiltshire, England; five wonderful grandchildren, Ashley Goldman and Tyler Goldman, and William Scott, Caitlin Scott, and Emma Scott; two brothers, Peter E. Cannava, of Soldotna, AK, and Joseph L. Cannava, Jr., of Mission Viejo, CA; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, 631 S. State St., Dover. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his memory may be made to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, 333 ½ Pennsylvania Avenue, SE, Washington, DC 20003-1148.
