Gladys Martin Covin Obituary
Mrs. Gladys Martin Covin

Beacon,NY - Gladys Martin Covin a 77 year resident of Beacon, NY, passed away Wednesday, January 15, at Vassar Brothers medical center, Poughkeepsie, NY. She was 101 years old. Mrs. Covin was born in Jenkinsville, South Carolina, on April 15, 1912, in the early morning hours around the time that the Titanic sank in the icy Atlantic. Her older sister, Mazie, recalls that it was an unusually cold April night even in the South, and the new-born baby had to be kept close to the warmth of the fireplace.

Gladys was the 13th of 16 children born to Dollie (1875-1961) and Robert Martin (1872-1950). She was educated in Fairfield County schools and, like her sister Mazie, went on to graduate from Allen University in Columbia. She became an elementary school teacher in several Fairfield County schools built through the philanthropy of Julius Rosenwald for children of color, including native Americans, in rural South.

Gladys moved to Beacon in 1937 where she met and married the love of her life, Toussaint Covin, a dietician at Castle Point Veterans' Administration Hospital. Together, Gladys and Toussaint led a very happily wedded life for more than 69 years. Gladys, a homemaker, enjoyed being an early version of Martha Stewart, and together with her husband, excelled at interior home decoration and landscaping. Members of St. James AME Zion Church in Beacon, Gladys and Toussaint joyfully devoted more than fifty years to beautifying, decorating and maintaining the church in the manner which befit its glorious history and heritage as the oldest African American church in the area. Mr. & Mrs. Covin lived two houses away from her sister and husband, Mazie and Henry Whitener at 69 Beekman Street for more than 25 years.

Gladys leaves to cherish her memories, her loving and devoted sisters Mazie Johnson of Beacon, NY, Thelma Feaster of Hampton, VA and Bernice Carry of Gaithersburg, MD. Several nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.

She was predeceased in her husband Toussaint Covin.

Mrs. Covin will lay in repose 10-11am Monday, January 20, at St James AME Zion Church 23 Academy Street Beacon, NY. Services 11am at the church. Reverend Lieta Singleton officiating. Interment 11am Tuesday, January 21, at Fishkill Rural Cemetery, Fishkill, NY.
