Beacon - Henry John Chaya of Beacon, New York, passed away surrounded by his family on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie. He was 91.
The son of the late Edward and Sophie Chaya, Henry was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey on December 27, 1921. He was predeceased by his loving wife Ruth Marie King.
Henry received a bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, and a master's degree in Chemistry from Purdue University in Indiana in 1949. At Purdue, he met Ruth, his wife of 60 years.
A World War II veteran, Henry served in the Signal Corps under General Eisenhower in Europe and later in Japan, where he was assigned to General MacArthur's headquarters.
Henry worked for Texaco for 37 years. Following his retirement in 1986, he studied anthropology at the State University of New York at Albany. He received a second master's degree in 1983. During the course of his anthropological studies, he traveled to sites in both the United States and Central America to conduct archeometric research.
In his spare time, Henry was very active with the Boy Scouts, specifically Troop 21 in Beacon and Troop 27 in Newburgh.
Henry is survived by two sons, Brother Henry Chaya of Bronx, NY and Edward Chaya of Beacon; four daughters, Dr. Ellen F. Abate and her husband, Leonard of Newburgh, Mary Villano and her husband, Gary of Cary, NC, Elizabeth Wells and her husband, Grant of Colfax, CA, and Barbara Chaya of Beacon; five grandchildren, Amy, Kyle, Matthew, Lauryn, and Michelle; and several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to acknowledge the wonderful and expert care given by the doctors, nurses, and staff of Woodland Pond, New Paltz, NY and Vassar Brothers Medical Center.
The family will receive their friends on Saturday, February 2, 2013 from 9 to 10:30am at Halvey Funeral Home, Inc., 24 Willow St., Beacon, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11am at St. Johns, 31 Willow St., Beacon.
Interment with military honors will follow at St. Joachim Cemetery, 301 Washington Avenue, Beacon.
