BROOKFIELD - James J. Nowak, 63, of South Beaver Creek Road, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 20, 2012, at the Faxton-St. Luke's Medical Center, following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Buffalo, on July 10, 1949, the son of the late Casimir and Frances Wierbuczki Nowak. Jim moved to Dutchess County as a young man attended school at Roosevelt High School. Following school, he joined the Army to serve valiantly and honorably with the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam. He received for his actions in combat, two Purple Hearts and one Bronze Star. He also survived three helicopter crashes. Following Vietnam, Jim returned to Dutchess County and worked as a Shop Steward for the Laborers International Union, Local 1000. On April 29, 1972, in Lagrangeville, Jim married Karen Ammon. In 2003, Jim and Karen moved their horse farm from Dutchess County to Brookfield. Jim was the happiest working alongside Karen, tending to the horses, turkeys, and other farm chores. He especially liked working in the hayfields. Jim was a member of the Johnsons Rogers American Legion Post of Brookfield.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Karen; his brother and sister-in-law, Jerome and Patricia Nowak, of Stafford, VA; and his nephew Leigh, and his wife, Corianna of Falls Herndon, VA. Jim is also survived by his constant companion and sidekick, his dog, Scrapper.
Jim was predeceased by his parents.
Graveside services with Military Honors will be held for the family at the Brookfield Cemetery. There is no public calling hours. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Paul Funeral Home of Brookfield.
