POUGHKEEPSIE - James J. O'Connor of the city of Poughkeepsie, died peacefully July 26, 2014 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center after a brief illness at the age of 87. Born in Philadelphia, PA on April 2, 1927, he was the son of the late John E. and Sarah Reynolds O'Connor. Jim was a graduate of West Catholic High School in Philadelphia and went on to earn his BS and MS from St. Joseph's University. He served in the US Navy for two years at the end of WWII (1945-46). Jim retired from Texaco Research Center in Beacon, NY after a successful career as a senior research chemist. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Poughkeepsie, NY and served in multiple ministries including Cursillo, prison outreach (Residents Encounter Christ), and as a special minister of the Eucharist for Vassar Brothers Medical Center. Jim's family includes his wife of 61 years, Therese Sloat O'Connor, children Mary (Charlie), Therese, Michael (Rena), Patricia Rippey, Stephen (Ellen), Paul (Christina), Ed (Patty), and Sarah Roa (Anibal); and grandchildren Megan, Aidan, Lydia, Colleen, Maeve, Evan, Liam, Hattie, Kelsey, Clara, Patrick, and Bridget.
Jim was a devoted husband, wonderful father, and loving Pop-Pop who willingly shared his vast knowledge, imparted his sage wisdom, and entertained his family with quick wit, storytelling and song, all with a twinkle in his eye.
Visitation will be Tuesday, July 29 from 4-8pm and Wednesday, July 30 from 9-10:30am at Parmele, Auchmoody & Schoonmaker Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Ave., Poughkeepsie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Poughkeepsie, NY. on Wednesday, July 30 at 11am. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Poughkeepsie.
