POUGHKEEPSIE - John Edward Beck, 90, of Poughkeepsie, NY entered into eternal rest on Monday, June 10, 2013 at the Palliative Care Unit at the Castle Point VA Health Care Center. He was born to the late Martin and Edna Beck in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on August 25, 1922. John graduated from Alleghany High School (1940) and the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering. In June 1943 he enlisted in the US Navy and was stationed in Hawaii. Among other duties, he was a weatherman aboard one of the ships and proudly served until his Honorable Discharge in March, 1946. He took great pride in serving his country and the family will be forever grateful for the generous care he received from the VA Health Care Center.John was employed as an engineer at IBM and worked there for 33 years until his retirement in 1987. In addition to being a member of the Quarter Century Club, he was involved in many activities as an IBMer including bowling in the Maryland League. Throughout his life, he was an active member of the Poughkeepsie United Methodist Church. He was head of the trustees committee and played a significant part in moving the church from the City of Poughkeepsie to its current location. John was predeceased by the love of his life, Dolores Beck, in February 2007 and his daughter Janette in December 1965. He is survived by his daughter Christine Arnfield of Poughkeepsie, his daughter Debbie Carrier and her husband David of Poughkeepsie, his sister Dolores and her husband Walt of Pittsburgh, his grandchildren and great grandchildren Jonathan, Stephanie and her husband Rod, Holly, Abygail, Olivia, Justin, Ella, Julia and several nephews. John was a true gentleman, very generous and deeply loved by his friends and family. John's family will receive friends at a memorial service at the Poughkeepsie United Methodist Church on Monday, June 24, 2013 at 10am. A Private burial is planned at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, Poughkeepsie, NY.
