John R. Gilli, Sr.

Hopewell Junction - John R. Gilli, Sr., 81, of Hopewell Junction, passed away at home on December 11, 2012, surrounded by his loving family after a long illness. Born January 19, 1931 in Pawling, NY, he was the son of the late James and Mary DeSalvo Gilli.

John served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was decorated with two Purple Hearts. He was employed at the Casting Corp. in Brewster, NY, as a machinist. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and was an avid Yankee fan. A wise man with a generous heart, he shared all his knowledge and love with his family and friends. His greatest achievement in life was the legacy of love he left behind for all of us.

John is survived by his son, John Gilli, Jr. and his wife, Elaine; his three daughters, Joann Griffin and her husband, William, Sandra Katalina and her husband, Michael, and Donna Hedges and her husband, Scott; 9 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Betty Jones and her husband, Jimmy. He was predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Martha, on October 29, 1997. He was also predeceased by his son, James Gilli, a brother, James Gilli, sister, Elizabeth Hylander; his mother-in-law, Josephine Nicholson and his brother-in-law, Howard Hylander.

Calling hours will be held on Friday December 14, 2012 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at the Robert H. Auchmoody Funeral Home, 900 Rt. 82, Hopewell Junction, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 15th at 10 am at St. Denis Church, Hopewell Junction, followed by interment at St. Denis Cemetery.
