John W. Cruise

Charlotte, NC - John W. Cruise, 97, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2014. He was born on January 3, 1917 to the late James and Florence Cruise of New York. In addition he was preceded in death by a brother James and a sister Ruth, his son John W. Cruise Jr., and grandson Daniel P. Neely.

John was husband of 68 years, father, grandfather, great grandfather, WWII Veteran, business owner and most importantly a man of God with a kind soul. John was born in Hudson, NY. He began working at a young age to help support his family. After high school John attended a local business school and worked for Coca Cola until entering the Army in April of 1941. He served in the Army until September of 1945 as a Tech Sergeant in the Third Artillery Field Division and was stationed in Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France and Germany. He was married to Dorothy M. Wood on January 20, 1946. He had two children, Diane and John. John primarily worked in sales in the beverage industry, eventually managing his own business until moving to Margate, Florida in 1971. There he continued to work in sales until he took a job with John Knox Retirement Village in Security where he worked until his retirement in 1992. He moved to Charlotte, NC in 2004.

John is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughter Diane Neely and son-in-law Jack D. Neely; four grand children Michael Neely and his wife Marla, Evan Neely, and Jennifer Cruise all of Charlotte, NC, and John W. Cruise III and his wife Dana of Boynton Beach, Florida; eight great grandchildren Kiersten and Haven Neely, Ava and Emily Neely and Jayden Zepeda all of Charlotte NC and John, Breyana and Bella Cruise of Boynton Beach, Florida.

He was much loved and cherished by his family and will be missed by all that had the good fortune to know him.

Visitation will be held on Monday, July 21, 2014 from 7-9 pm at Heritage Funeral Home, 3700 Forest Lawn Drive, Matthews, with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, 4207 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte beginning at 1:00 pm. Arrangements are under the care of Heritage Funeral Home, Weddington Chapel.
