POUGHKEEPSIE - Leo M. Ritter, 82, of Poughkeepsie, died September 5, 2013. Leo was a first generation American, born in Beacon on October 8, 1930, as his parents, Jacob and Sarah Ritter, were born in Hungary. Leo started from humble beginnings and was sent to NYC to get an education where he graduated from Stuyvesant High School. Leo greatly appreciated the opportunities of living in America and always considered it a gift. Leo went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts from Champlain College in Plattsburgh, New York and then went on to earn a law degree from the University of Buffalo Law School. Following law school, he served in the United States Army. Leo married the love of his life Joan (Bugar) on June 26, 1965 and they were happily married for 48 years. Leo's life revolved around his family, which included their four children and seven grandchildren all of whom he was extremely proud. Leo was a wonderful son, husband, father and grandfather. He was loving, kind, generous and giving to all who came in contact with him. He was so appreciative of small joys in life and had an incredibly strong work ethic. He was a private attorney in Dutchess County for over 53 years and was a member of the New York State Bar Association and Dutchess County Bar Association during that time. He served as a Town Attorney in the Town of Poughkeepsie from 1968 through 1977. His passion for work was out of a commitment to help others in need. In addition to family and work, Leo was very community minded. He was Past President of Kiwanis Club of Wappingers Falls, Poughkeepsie South Rotary Club, Dutchess County Chapter of , Dutchess County Association for Senior Citizens and Beacon Hebrew Alliance. He also served as Past Trustee of Temple Beth El, Sloper-Willen Community Ambulance Service, Past Director & Vice President of County Players and Board Member of Cunneen Hackett Arts Center. He was an active and lifelong member of Beacon Hebrew Alliance and Chelsea Yacht Club. He enjoyed traveling, boating, tennis and time at his summer home on Candlewood Lake entertaining friends and family. Leo was predeceased by siblings Florence Fulmer and Louis and Joseph Ritter. In addition to his loving wife Joan, Leo is survived by his four children; daughter and son in law: Deirdre & Jeffrey Hill of Queensbury, NY, daughter and son in law: Danah & Jeremy Moore of Poughkeepsie, NY, son and daughter in law: Todd and Janette Ritter of Poughkeepsie, NY and daughter: Denise Ritter of New York City. He also leaves behind his seven grandchildren, Avery and Ethan Hill, Jacob, Justin and Amanda Moore, Joshua and Jonah Ritter and his brother and sister in law Milton & Karla Ritter of Newburgh, NY. The funeral will be held at Beacon Hebrew Alliance, 331 Verplanck Ave, Beacon, NY on Sunday, September 8 at 2:30 PM. Interment will follow directly at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, 342 South Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY. The family will be sitting shiva on Sunday and Monday at the home of Todd Ritter.
