Red Hook, NY - Murray J. Van Ness,87, died on March 22 at Columbia Memorial Hospital from complications related to Alzheimer's disease.
He was born Dec. 16, 1925 in Rutland, NY, the son of the late Henry and Mabel (Sargent) Van Ness. Murray was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Air Force as a radio operator, stationed on the island of Guam. He was a beloved music teacher in the Red Hook Schools from 1948 until his retirement in 1981, building a successful music program and positively influencing hundreds of students. In 1966, he took a two-year leave of absence from Red Hook, traveling with his family to the island of Guam as a music consultant for the Guam Department of Education.
Surviving are his sister Gladys Sacci of Copenhagen, NY; his daughter, Lynn Van Ness of Red Hook; his son and daughter in lalw, Alan Van Ness and Anne Oja of Red Hook; and grandchildren Emily Van Ness and Andrew Van Ness, also of Red Hook. Murray was pre-deceased by three brothers: Richard, Lyle and Gilbert Van ness.
According to his wishes, there are no calling hours. Private cremation is at the convenience of the family under the direction of the Yadack-Fox Funeral Home of Germantown, NY.
