Robert Edwin Rushforth

New Paltz - Robert Edwin Rushforth, age 90, of New Paltz died Friday, April 4, 2014 at home after a long illness. He was born February 25, 1924 in Yonkers, NY the son of the late Robert Roy and the late Marjorie C. (Jones) Rushforth.

He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Yonkers and while attending Oswego State Teacher's College, he volunteered in the U.S. Army on October 29, 1942. While serving, he attended Springfield College MA, participating in the Air Force Flight Program from Oct. 1943 -Feb. 1944. He shipped overseas on Nov., 1944 and was transferred to the 87th Infantry Division, 334th Field Artillery Headquarters Battery as a Lineman 641 (communications). Robert was in the Battle of Central Europe, Rhineland and Ardennes. Sniper fire in Germany resulted in a back injury in a fall from a communications pole. Returning to the US in July, 1945, he received an Honorable Discharge from Felton General Hospital, Fort Dix, NJ in Nov., 1945.

On August 23, 1947, he married Daisy Duffy. Mrs. Rushford survives at home. He graduated from the State University at Oswego in 1948 and received his MS Degree from SUNY New Paltz. Enjoying his teaching for 36 years, he retired from Spackenkill Union Free School District in 1985. Over those years, he taught Industrial Arts, Algebra, General Science and Mechanical Drawing in Yonkers, Dover Plains, Poughkeepsie and Spackenkill.

Robert was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary 20-04, Department of Homeland Security, American Legion Post 0176, Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post 8645, 87th Infantry Division Association, American Racing Pigeon Union, Inc., Kingston Power Boat Association, Saint David's Society of Poultney, VT and Spackenkill Retired Teacher's Association.

He loved his family and family gatherings and shared activities; boating, sailing, racing homing pigeons, playing the piano and accordion, cross country skiing, traveling. He was also an avid reader and creative craftsman.

Survivors include his wife, Daisy; son, Robert R. Rushford and his wife, Monica; son, David S. Rushforth, all of New Paltz; grandson, Ian Rushforth and his wife, Heather; great-grandchildren, Annabeth Rushforth and Hudson Robert Rushforth of Greensboro, NC; sister-in- laws, Doris Raudenbush and Carole Rushforth, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Mary Rushforth, Vera Rushforth Irwin and Grace Connolly and brother, William Joseph Rushforth.

There will be no calling hours. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
