POUGHKEEPSIE - Walter Werner Gross, 92, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, May 22, 2013. He was born in Magdeburg, Germany on February 22, 1921 to Helena and Willy Gross. The family immigrated to the United States when Werner was very young and settled in the Bronx where he attended school and was president of his senior class. He received his B.S. in German and English from New York University and after World War II he returned to NYU and received his M.A. in Administration. Werner enlisted and served with the 522nd Field Artillery serving asaide to his Colonel. He fought during the action at Normandy and at the Battle of the Bulge.After the war he rushed home to marry his love, Jeanne, and they were happy together for over65 years. He also started his teaching career and taught English, German and History in Wantagh,Long Island, became chairman of the Foreign Language department and retired to Poughkeepsiein 1988. He was an avid reader and enjoyed playing the organ and harmonica. He had a wry sense of humor and loved to tell stories. He was an active member of the Steuben Society of America for over forty years and was a member of Germania. He was also a member of the FirstLutheran Church and was especially happy and blessed to deliver the Good Friday service in theGerman language for a number of years. Werner leaves a great legacy as a military man, as a fine teacher, as a loving husband and father and as a faithful Christian. Werner is survived by his wife, Jeanne, his son , Dr. Conrad Gross and wife, Barbara of Farmingdale, N.J.; his son, Dr.Theodore Gross and wife, Dr. Corazon (Corie) Flores of Poughkeepsie. Also his granddaughters, Kerstin Zielinski and husband, Mark, of Freehold, NJ and Annika Sanders and her husband, Justin, of Atlanta, Ga. and grandson, Teddy Gross, of Poughkeepsie. Also a great- granddaughter, Karolyna Zielinski. Visitation will be held Sunday, May 26, 2013 and Monday, May 27, 2013 4-6 PM at the Wm. G. Miller & Son FH, Inc., 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. Services will be held Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at 10:30 AM in the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 325 Mill St., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. Inurnment will follow in the Community Mausoleum of Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers Memorial Donations amy be made to: First Evangelical Lutheran Church or Germania Club, 37 Old De Garmo Rd., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.
