TUNKHANNOCK, PA - Wesley E. Virtue entered eternal life on Saturday, October 12, 2013, at Glen Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Danbury, CT. He was 83. Born on June 17, 1930 to Earl and Annie C. Virtue, Wes grew up in South Portland, Maine.
From January 1951 to December 1953 Wes proudly served as a United States Marine in an anti-aircraft outfit maintaining electronic equipment. For his service during the Korean Conflict, he received the Navy Unit Commendation, Marine Corp Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korea Service Medal with two Bronze campaign stars, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, United Nations Service Medal, Republic of Korea War Service Medal, and the Rifle Marksman Badge.
On July 5, 1952, he married Barbara Ann Barnes. The Virtues were blessed with three loving children. Later, they welcomed six grandchildren and, just last year, a precious great-grandson. Family was the center and great joy of their life. This past summer, the Virtues had celebrated their 61st Wedding Anniversary.
Wes was employed by the IBM Corporation in 1954, where he became a senior manager and worked until his retirement in 1986. His career brought him to the Town of East Fishkill in 1965 where he was a star first baseman for the Brettview Acres Men's Softball League.
Community and civic duty were also important to Wes. He served East Fishkill first as a Republican Town Councilman, then as Deputy Supervisor in 1978. He was elected Town Supervisor in 1981 and served until 1989.
In 1995, Wes and Barbara retired to Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania. Never one to take things slow, Wes remained an avid golfer and became an active member of American Legion Post 457. Retirement allowed Wes to indulge his life-long passion for the New England sports teams.
In addition to his wife, Wes is survived by his sister Barbara Cleveland and her husband Roy; his son Todd; his daughter Linda Nilsen and her husband Gerard; his daughter-in-law Janet Virtue; his grandchildren Stephanie Sierra and her husband David, Deanna and Brandon Virtue, and Andrea and Matthew Nilsen; and his great-grandson, Elijah Sierra. He was predeceased by his son Steve Virtue and grandson Timothy Virtue.
A memorial service will be held on Friday,October 18, from 2 to 3 pm at the Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home, 73 West Tioga Street, Tunkhannock, PA 18657. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
