Beacon - William J. O'Donnell, a lifelong Beacon resident, passed away on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie surrounded by his family. He was 85.
Born in Beacon on April 17, 1928 Bill was the son of H. James and Catherine Powell O'Donnell. Bill graduated from Beacon High School in 1945. He proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1948 as a Sonarman Third Class on the Destroyer 714. Bill married the former Patricia Rose on September 21, 1952. Mrs. O'Donnell survives at home.
Bill was an active parishioner of St. Joachim - St. John the Evangelist Church where he was an usher at St. John's Church since 1951. He was a Fourth Degree Knight, past Grand Knight and honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus, Trinity Council No. 445 in Beacon. Bill was a member of the Newburgh Bowling Association, now known as the Mid-Hudson U.S. Bowling Congress, serving as past secretary and treasurer. He was inducted into the Association Hall of Fame in 1980 and inducted into the Northeast Council Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 2005. Bill worked several jobs over the years, including at Matteawan Correctional Facility, Darrow Brothers Men's Clothing Store, IBM for 35 years as a Patent Draftsman and Production Control and part-time at Halvey Funeral Home.
In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by his children, Pat O'Donnell of Fishkill, Kathy Lees and her husband, John of Murrells Inlet, SC, Mary Werner and her husband, Chris of Stormville and Jeff O'Donnell and his wife, Kim of the Town of Newburgh; his grandchildren, Melissa Lees of Baltimore, MD, Tim Lees and his wife, Catie of Winterville, GA, Mason, Graham and Mitchell Werner of Stormville; his great granddaughter, Raygan Lees of GA; his brother, James O'Donnell of Glenham; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive their friends on Friday, February 14, 2014 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Halvey Funeral Home, Inc., 24 Willow Street, Beacon. Members of the Knights of Columbus will hold services at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 15 at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 31 Willow Street, Beacon. Interment with military honors will follow at St. Joachim Cemetery, 301 Washington Avenue, Beacon.
