Alexander, Alton I.

Berkshire: Alton I. Alexander, 81, of Berkshire, passed away peacefully at Lourdes Hospital on Monday, March 10, 2014, after an extended illness. Originally from Newark Valley, he graduated in 1950. Alton made his home in Groton, NY after serving in the Army during the Korean conflict. He served honorably as a New York State Trooper for 32 years, a career he was most proud of, retiring in 1987. In addition, Al was Groton Town Justice for 8 years from 1992 to 2000. When not working in law enforcement and in retirement, he kept busy with his "Tinkering A" farm, driver for Baker-Miller Lumber, assistant to Munson's Auctioneers and Shurtleff Funeral Home. After his retirement, he also had the chance to travel extensively to all fifty states and England, Scotland and Wales, and Aruba. He accomplished all of this while being father to five children, Dan (Taffy) Alexander of NV, Crystal (Ralph) Pitts of FL, Ellen Alexander of NV, Kandi (Victor) Lara of NV, Andy (Melissa) Alexander of FL; stepfather to five, Christine Snyder of Preble, Michael Shields of Brewerton, Greg (Diane) Shields of Dedham, MA, Lori Conger of Groton, and Teri (Brian) Farrell of Groton. He and his deceased wife, Martha, also had 24 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren together, all who knew the love that Alton had for them. More recently, Alton had made his home in Berkshire, not far from where he grew up. Survivors also include his devoted caretaker and companion of the past eight years, Jackie Jewett of Berkshire; brothers, Gilbert, David, Victor, and Kenneth Alexander; many nieces and nephews. Alton was a member of the Retired Troopers Association, Berkshire Senior Citizens, and the Carrington-Fuller Post of the American Legion in Groton. He was predeceased by his wife, Martha in 2005; his parents, Herbert and Ethyle (June) Alexander; brothers, Herbert Jr., and Delbert; and stepson, Michael in 2012. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Shurtleff Funeral Home, 103 Lincoln Ave., Groton. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Alton will be laid to rest later in the spring, next to his beloved Martha, in the Groton Rural Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Lourdes Hospice, 4102 Old Vestal Rd., Vestal, NY 13850.
