Buchanan, Jennifer S.

Vestal, New York: Jennifer S. Buchanan, 49, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2013 surrounded by her loving family and close friends, having courageously endured a four-year battle with breast cancer. Jennifer is survived by her children, Jacquelin, Richard and Mitchell Buchanan; mother, Annette Schweiger and her husband, Stephen Cooper; father, Robert Schweiger; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Raymond and Shannon Schweiger, and Robert Schweiger; father of her children, Richard Buchanan, Jr.; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and many, many friends. Jen (as she liked to be called) was the best friend one could ever hope for. She was kind, compassionate and devoted, and always placed the welfare of others above her own. Jen was especially close to long-time friends Debbie, Sandi, Liz, Verna and a very close 'sisterly' bond with her sister-in-law and best friend, Kristine. She had special bonds with her friend Terri, who stood by her as she battled with cancer, and her friend the late James M. Wood ("Woody"), a noted Owegoan who taught her so much about what was important in life. Jen was so very proud of her three children. They were her inspiration in everything. She shared with Jacquelin an immense passion for horses; they often attended rodeos and horse shows together. Jen also attended nearly every one of Mitchell's motocross races and Richard's running events. Her caring nature extended to all kinds of animals, especially dogs and cats in need of care or a home. Jen fulfilled her dream of becoming a nurse and took great pride in her skills in taking care of others in need; she considered work to be her "happy place." She was always smiling and carrying a positive attitude, and had a special gift for to lifting people's spirits and raising their hopes. Jen's legacy will live on through the examples she set for all who knew and loved her. A special thank you goes to Yelena Novik, MD and Silvia Formenti, MD of Clinical Trials at NYU Cancer Institute, and their staff for the care and love they gave to Jennifer in their search for the cure for her cancer. Also, a very special thank you is due Olivia Chin, who guided Jen to the NYU Cancer Institute. A Mass of Celebration will be held on Tues., Nov. 5 at 11:00 am at St. Margaret Mary Church, 1110 Pennsylvania Ave., Apalachin with the Rev. William Moorby, officiating. A reception at the church will immediately follow the mass. The family will receive friends on Mon., Nov. 4 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Estey, Munroe & Fahey Funeral Home, 15 Park St., Owego. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jennifer's name to Traci's Hope, P.O. Box 504, Apalachin, NY 13732 and/or A New Hope Center, 20 Church St, Owego, NY 13827.
