DENNIS, JOHN D.

Endicott: John D. Dennis, 78, succumbed to his battle with cancer on Thursday, April 4, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Judith; his son, James of Columbus, Ohio and his daughter, Jennifer (Roderick) Potter of Buffalo. He is also survived by his two grandchildren, Vera L. and Allen Potter. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren. John, an only child, was born in Toledo, Ohio to Dorothy and Norris F. Dennis. He was also predeceased by his step-mother, Vera A. Dennis. He is survived by two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Bean, Bozeman, MT. and Marilyn Schafer (Michael) Schafer, Endwell. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. His wit and companionship will be missed by many, especially his family. John received a BS from the University of Illinois, a MS from Purdue University and a PhD from Ohio State University, all in Industrial Engineering. He also graduated from Officer's Candidate School, in Newport R.I. and was a Lieutenant in the US Navy. John worked as an Industrial Engineer at IBM Endicott before taking an educational leave to get his doctorate. After receiving his doctorate he was an associate professor of IE at the University of Central Florida, Orlando and Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY before returning to IBM at FSD in Owego. He retired from both IBM and Lockheed - Martin, Owego. After retirement he was an adjunct professor at Binghamton University and TC3. One of his favorite teaching positions was at Owego Elementary School, where he volunteered for 10 years to tutor 3rd-5th graders in math and reading. He was very fond of his two yellow labs, Sandy and Annie. He loved music, literature, art, architecture and movies. He was an avid fan of Big Ten college football and basketball, especially Ohio State. His favorite trip was to Paris and the Loire Valley in France. He worked on a "project car" and admired cars with good engineering. In his earlier years he restored a 150 year old house and enjoyed skiing, golfing, sailing and bowling. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, April 19th at 11:00 at Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main St., Endicott, N.Y. 13760. The family will receive friends at Allen Memorial Home on Thursday, April 18th from 4 to 6 pm. A private burial will be held at a later date.
