John Gosney Obituary

Gosney, John "Jack" Earl

Binghamton: John "Jack" Earl Gosney, 83, of Binghamton, passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at home surrounded by his loving family. Jack was born November 22, 1930 to Earl and Catherine (Sheehan) Gosney in Binghamton. He graduated from Saint Paul's High School in 1949 and proudly served his country as a member of the United State Marine Corps. In 1952, he married the love of his life, Jayne Davis. Jack and Jayne went on to have seven children: John Kevin, James, Joanne, Jerome, Jane Karen, Joseph, and Jacqueline. Jack celebrated his long career with IBM when he retired in 1989 as the manager of the IBM country club. After retirement, he enjoyed working with the Broome County courts, traveling with his wife Jayne and friends, and spending time with his family. Throughout his life, he served on the boards of numerous charitable organizations. Recently, Jack was honored for his 27 years of volunteer work with the Stop DWI Holiday Classic. He was an avid sports fan, rooting for Notre Dame, the Yankees, and Seton Catholic High School. Jack was deeply devoted to the Lord and his church. He attended Mass daily and was an active member of the parish of Saints John and Andrew, Binghamton. Jack's proudest accomplishment was his family. "Pa," as he was known to his family, is survived by Jayne, his wife of 62 years; his children, Kevin (Mary) Gosney, Jimmy Gosney, Joanne Taylor, Jerry (Sharon) Gosney, Karen (Joe) Barnes, Joe (Martha) Gosney, and Jackie (Chet) Kupiec; 23 grandchildren, John, Jeffrey, and Jason, Shalea and Alicia, Timmy and Nicole, Katie, Jerome, Danny, Carolyn, and Patrick, Kristen, Kelley, Patrick, and Erin, Jennie, Joey, and Jayne, Megan, Sarah, Kelly, and Jake; six great-grandchildren, Harper and Hadley, Daniel and Jack, Cameron and Aaron; nieces, MaryCay, Julie; nephew, Bobby Gosney; and cousins; as well as his brother and best friend, Robert (Sophie) Gosney. A Funeral Mass will be offered at the Church of Saints John and Andrew, Vestal Ave., Binghamton, Monday at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main St., Binghamton, Sunday from 1-4 p.m. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in memory of Jack be made to Seton Catholic Central High School Athletic Program, 70 Seminary Ave., Binghamton, NY 13905 or Catholic Charities Food Pantry, 232 Main St., Binghamton, NY 13905.

Memories and Condolences
for John Gosney

Not sure what to say?

Mrs. Gosney and Family,

I was very sorry to hear the news of Mr. Gosney's passing. He was a positive presence throughout my childhood on the south-side when I was hanging out with Jerry and Joey. Whether as a kid at CYO on the basketball courts or later in high school on the gridiron, he was always there cheering us on, providing encouragement and praise regardless of the outcome on the scoreboard. I know he was very proud of his beautiful, close knit family. I pray that God grant you all the courage and strength to get through this difficult time together.

My Deepest Sympathy and Prayers

Frank and Margaret Muscatello and family.

Mrs. Gosney and Family, I am so sorry to hear of Jack's passing. Please accept my condolences. What a wonderful man, involved in so many activities to help others while raising a big family of his own. I will always remember him being at all of the games at St Johns and offering kind words of support and encouragement. He was certainly rewarded with a long life and great family, 23 grand children! Rest in peace Jack, your kind are too few and far between and you will be missed.

Jerry and Gosney clan: Condolances for the passing of your exemplary father, I remember fondly, from 40 years out, the re-assuring grip of his handshake and kind words after a (lost) game, a competitor who understood, and a father who understood more. My deepest condolances above all to your mother (62 years of marriage---awesome!); and "brother and best friend" Robert, who certainly knew him the longest. Jerry, I truly wish I could be there for you today and tomorrow, as you were there for us a few years ago in the passing of our parents, know that I am thinking of you from here, the best to all as we carry forward the legacies of all the ways they cared for us.

With respect and appreciation,

God has summoned the patriarch of the Gosney family. I mourn with you at the void and earthly loss felt by "Jack" passing. He was truly a strong leader and passionate family man. With his angels wings affixed may he continue to guide and look over you and be with you spiritually. May the wonderful family he and Jayne built continue and grow as a shining tribute in his proud honor. God bless and Godspeed!

To the entire Gosney Family,
So sorry for your loss. Jack & Jayne Gosney along with Bob & Sophie Gosney & their great families were always a class act. Mr.Gos would tell it like it is & gave us good advice, especially in our teen years, "when we & I needed it the most". Many fond memories of him & my dad supporting/attending all our sporting events,"I'm sure they shared some laughs of their sons battleing eachother in those southside b-ball tourneys".I've had the privilege of playing sports & growing up with the big & tall Gosneys'... Jerry & his brothers.I know alot of thier mental/physical toughness & loyalty to their teammates & friends along with their "keen sense of humor" was attributed/influenced by their "U.S.Marine Dad -Jack Gosney"! Mr. Gos will be sorely missed by his family, friends & the whole community...may he rest in peace.

I was the IBM photographer and I had to attend many IBM activities at the IBM Country Club to photograph many dignitaries and performing stars,Jack was always there to guide me in what would be the best way to go about to photograph these performing artists..We had festivities like Qurter Century Days and Carnivals and guests like Johnny Bench and Julious La Rosa just to mention a few. Jack ,you made my job easier..What a guy,a wonderful caring person. Jack, some day we will meet again and maybe we can sit down and have a coffee and chit -chat..Until then May God Hold You In The Palm Of His Hand and may God Bless Your Family.
