MICHAEL L. MORAN (A.K.A "Papa Mike") 76, a lifetime Johnson City resident, passed away unexpectedly Monday December 17. Mike is predeceased by his parents Matilda and Andrew; sister Andrea; and son Tim. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Carol (Newman); his son Michael and wife Colleen; daughter-in-law Lisa; brother James and wife Carol; his grandchildren who were the light of his life-Gabrielle, Nicholas, Sean, Brayden, Max, and Tyler; granddog Reilly; and many dear cousins, nephews, nieces, in-laws, and numerous good friends. Mike graduated from Johnson City High School and Fishburne Military Academy where he was a three sport standout in baseball, basketball, and football. He also attended The Citadel and Broome Community College. He was a lifetime member of St. James Church and retired with pride from the Johnson City Fire Department after many years of service. Growing up in the family house on North Street, located behind the center field scoreboard of Johnson Field, Mike embodied all sports. He truly enjoyed hunting and fishing and taught those closest to him his love and appreciation of the outdoors. He traveled to Colorado, Canada, and Alaska on hunting expeditions with his sons and friends, as evidenced by the numerous pictures and mounted animal heads that adorned the walls of their house; as well as the several taxidermied specimens of bear, moose, elk, coyote, etc. that are housed in the "addition" to the back of the house. Mike followed sports obsessively- locally at the grade school, high school, and college level, as well as at the professional level-his favorites being the Yankees, NY Giants, and the Knicks. He was consistently teaching, critiqueing, and imparting his sports expertise to his sons, and then to his grandchildren. Mike would drive all over to watch Nick and Sean compete in basketball, baseball, and football; as well as delighting in watching Gabrielle play lacrosse and volleyball. His two youngest grandsons Brady and Max were already introduced in "squaring up a jump shot" and following through with their throws. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. James Church, Friday December 21, at 12:30 p.m. Entombment will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at St. James Church, Friday from 9:30 a.m until 12:15 p.m. In lieu of flowers, due to limited space, please consider a donation to the Southern Tier Down Syndrome Network- DSINSTNY, PO Box 59, Endicott, N.Y. 13760 in honor of his grandson Nicholas, In Michael L.
