Robert M. Place, 78, of Binghamton, passed away unexpectedly and was reunited with his wife Joan M. (Giordano) Place on Saturday, February 22, 2014. He was predeceased by his father, Arthur L. Place and brother-in-law, James D. Rollo. He is survived by his family whom he loved; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kelli (Norm) Weber, Danielle (Stéphane) Couturier, Roxanne (Larry) Vincent; six grandchildren, Tiffany (Anthony), Ryan (Nikki), Owen and Clara; Erika and Beth; eight great-grandchildren; mother, Dorothy E. Place; sister, Shirley Rollo; two sisters-in-law, Louise Jenks and Maria Launikitis; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and numerous dear friends. Bob proudly served in the United States Navy and was a member of the American Legion Post 1227. He retired from the Binghamton Police Department and after his retirement he worked for the Binghamton Savings Bank as a security officer. Bob recently was a bus driver for Chenango Forks School District, and enjoyed refereeing football games. He was an avid golfer, and was a volunteer for the BC Open and Dick's Opens. He enjoyed walking through the woods scouting deer as he loved to hunt and was a member of the Binghamton Rifle Association. Bob will be remembered by the twinkle in his eye, the smile on his face, his warm laugh, and especially his love for the Yankees and Giants. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 10 a.m. at Sts. John and Andrew Church with Rev. Msgr. Michael Meagher officiating. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City with military honors. The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 27, 2014 from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. at J.F. Rice Funeral Home, Inc., 150 Main St., Johnson City. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bob's memory can be made to the Chenango Forks Bob Place Scholarship Fund, PO Box 344, Endicott, NY 13761-0344.
