Endicott, New York: Robert (Bob) R. Nilsen, previously of Merrick, New York and Amherst, Virginia. Born December 31, 1928, in Astoria, Queens. Son of George F. and Ruth. Beloved husband of Magdalena - "Leni", father of Patricia, father-in law to Brian Eldridge, and grandfather to his special pal, Elaine Hartman, who survive him. Bob is also survived by his nieces in the U.S., Elizabeth (Thomas) Spina, Mary Louise Mulligan, and Bernadette (Arthur) Knippler; and in Germany, his sister-in-law Lucie and husband Wilhelm Hirth of Freiburg, sister-in-law Else Faninger of Sulzburg, as well as nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind special friends Bruno and Sylvia Boehm of Zurich, Switzerland. He was predeceased by his brother Edward, and his brothers and sisters in-law Hans Faninger, Marlies Peil (Karl Bergmann) and most beloved Martha (Joseph) Mulligan. Robert served in the U.S. Navy (1946-1948) aboard the USS Richard E. Kraus (DD-849), and was awarded the WWII Victory Medal. He worked at Allied Aviation Services at John F. Kennedy Airport. Besides spending time with his family, he relished reading, especially at his local libraries, country drives and monitoring the Stock Exchange. Having only recently relocated to Endicott, Bob and Leni enjoyed nearly a half-century of companionship, particularly their later years in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The family wishes to thank Doctors Gehring, Petrosky and Tinklepaugh, and the many caregivers at Lourdes Hospice, especially Laurie, Wendy, Carolyn, Dixie and Elaine; and Hospice volunteer, Terry.
