Passed away at home the evening of April 17, 2013, while being visited and comforted by several family members. Just shy of her 96th birthday. Alfreda was born in Logan, Utah in 1917 to Alfred W. and Lilly May Shapley. Her mother Lilly was one of 11 children, so Alfreda grew up surrounded by a large family of aunts and uncles and several cousins, some of whom still reside in Utah. Alfreda at one time owned her own restaurant, "The Barrel House", in Los Angeles before moving to No. Ca. eventually settling in San Francisco and working in Data Processing for UCSF for several years before retiring to Petaluma 30 years. ago. She loved S.F. and enjoyed the many things she and her friends were able to do by walking down to the corner and hopping on a bus or cable car. She volunteered her time for the Special Olympics and was a member of the DeYoung Museum, and when the Giants came to S.F., she became an avid fan and spent many days at Candlestick! Her love for the Giants never faded and she was always up for watching the games, especially with anyone who shared her passion. And was delighted that they won two World Championships. She was wonderful cook and has passed on many fond memories and great family recipes. Alfreda had so many friends and was loved by all who met her. She liked doing so many things, had so many interests and was always willing to learn more. She loved to make dolls and sew and travel, Mexico, Hawaii, bus trips to Reno and Tahoe, even a cruise to Alaska. In recent years she spent more time playing card games, bunko and board games with her close friends and an occasional trip to the Indian casinos. Alfreda is a very special person, she lived life to the fullest and lived a full life. We love her and will miss her always, but is in our hearts forever........... Alfreda was preceeded in death by both her parents, an infant brother, "Tommy" and a granddaughter Kori Lynn Counter. Survived by her daughter Nona (Jim) Estabrook of Petaluma, sister Laree Harrison, nephew Tom Harrison both of Las Vegas, NV, niece Linda (Steve) Young of Santee, CA, four grandchildren, Jody Counter, Laura Counter both of Petaluma, CA, Kevin Counter of Santa Rosa, CA, Jamie (Suzann) Counter of Hanford, CA.
