Died at 97 peacefully surrounded by his family Tuesday July 29th. Born in Margaret, Alabama to Frances and Arthur Rush Bowdon. They relocated to Petaluma where Art spent his childhood. He attended SRJC and graduated from Cal Berkeley. He later attended UCSF's School of Optometry and practiced in Santa Rosa for 45 years. He served as a First Lieutenant on the battleship Maryland in the Pacific Ocean during World War II. Early involvement as a Sea Scout and a love of sailing led to his building a boat of his own. From these origins he went on to organize the first sailing program for the city of Santa Rosa and then established the Tomales Bay Sailing Club. Art was happiest either sailing or working in his woodshop. With his wife of 37 years, Helen Pell Bowdon, they traveled extensively around the United States and abroad. He is survived by his wife and four daughters; Susan Bowdon Rubin, Barbara Bowdon Wishard, Ruth Bowdon Merritt and Janet Bowdon Doto and many beloved grandchildren. We sincerely thank Kaiser SR and Memorial Hospice for their outstanding care and compassion. A private celebration of life will be held at their home in Santa Rosa.
