Don C. Johnston passed on July 16 at the age of 93. He was born in DuBois, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Penn State University before joining the Navy during World War II. Don served as a Supply Officer aboard the aircraft carrier Ommaney Bay. The ship was sunk in the Sulu Sea by a Japanese plane. Don was rescued and put on the battleship New Mexico which was hit by another kamikazee while bombing Manila. 30 were killed but the ship did not sink. While serving in the Navy, Don married a WAVE, Louise Swain, from Sebastopol, CA. They settled in Sebastopol where they enjoyed 68 years together. Don was a New York Life Insurance agent. He also was on the Board of Directors of WestAmerica Bank for 30 years. He is preceded in death by his beloved son David. He is survived by his loving wife Louise and four grandchildren: Don M. Johnston of Australia, Katie Johnston of Boston, Chris Johnston of Missouri, Thomas Johnston of Florida, one great grandson and many loving nieces and nephews. Don enjoyed photography, world travel, birding and tennis. He and Louise were strong supporters of the Santa Rosa Symphony, the Green Music Center, Save-the-Redwoods League and the Point Reyes Bird Observatory Scientific Research. At his request there will be no services.
