Died peacefully at home on June 28, 2014. She was a woman with more friends and family than most can ever hope for. She made friends easily, keeping them forever, leaving her with an enormous extended family. Her 40 years of marriage to Clifford Richards was a true love connection. Together they raised five sons in Petaluma. She and Cliff enjoyed spending time together and traveling around the world. Born in Santa Rosa to Don and Irene DuVander in 1934, Donna grew up on the family's ranch in Windsor. She attended Healdsburg High School, Santa Rosa Junior College and San Jose State. Donna was a well loved elementary school teacher and principal for more than 38 years, most of which was spent at the Dunbar school in Kenwood. After retirement she became an accomplished artist, exhibiting and winning awards for her paintings at the Sonoma County fair. She loved swimming at the local fitness center, was a fond member in her book club and enjoyed painting classes where she met many of her close friends. An excellent cook, Donna fed family and friends graciously and often. Her sons' girlfriends became daughters and stayed for a lifetime. Grandchildren Will Thomas, Chloe Kamber, Zora Hartley, Joey and Logan Richards, adopted grandsons Finn and Noah Cook and great-grandsons Ethan and Landon Thomas all provided her with great joy. Before being diagnosed with cancer herself, Donna spent the previous 18 months caring for her oldest son Kristian Hartley, who died of cancer in January of this year. She was also preceded in death by son Mark Richards. Donna is survived by sons Joe Hartley, Montana Hartley and Mike Richards and daughters-in-law, Betsy Richards and Magdalena Kamber and her siblings Georgiana (Anandi) DuVander, Marilyn DuVander, Jim and Paula DuVander, Ted and Pat DuVander, Margi Goff, and brother-in-law Tom Richards and his wife Desma. She was preceded in death by brothers-in-law Rick Goff, Lee Richards and sister-in-law Robin Richards. Other much-loved survivors include adopted daughters Laura Barnum, Christii Cook and Kristy Hellum, many nieces, including Jane Engdahl, nephews, cousins and innumerable friends, all considered close family by Donna. A special thank you goes to loving caregivers Marilyn Duvander, Pam Barber, Betsy Richards, Holly Yameshka, and Lidia Setitaia and especially Bethany and Sutter Health Hospice. All those who loved Donna are invited to her memorial service and Celebration of Life, with potluck reception to follow on August 12th at 1 p.m. at the Mary Agatha Furth Center in Windsor Ca. In lieu of flowers, contributions would be appreciated to Sutter Hospice (
