A long-time resident of Santa Rosa passed away on Friday, March 8th at his home at the age of 97. He was born June 8, 1915 on the family farm near Saude, Iowa. Ed was the youngest of three children of Carl A. and Tomena Steensland. In 1918 his family moved to a farm near Amery, Wisconsin where Ed attended school, graduating from Amery High School in 1933. He was a graduate of the Minneapolis Business College and went on to further studies at the University of Minnesota. After completing his education, Ed went to work for Lutheran Brotherhood for two years, then Investors Diversified Services in the field of mortgage investments. After six years he left Minnesota for the west coast. While working in Los Angeles, Ed met Beatrice Gideon whom he married on August 8, 1946. Ed had a long career in the insurance and real estate industries. He was employed by the National Life Insurance Company of Vermont from 1951 until his retirement in 1975. Ed was elected an officer of the firm in 1962. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Bank of Hawaii's mortgage investment trust company from 1976 until his retirement in 1985. Ed and Bea moved from Los Angeles to Santa Rosa in 1975. Ed took great pride in helping with the design and construction of their retirement home. They were active and faithful members of St. Mark's Lutheran Church and generous donors to many charitable organizations. Ed was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bea who died in January, 1984. Also preceding him in death were his parents Carl Alfred and Tomena, brother Merle, and sister Charlotte Steensland. He is survived by his nephew John Steensland of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, and nieces Ruth (James) Jonen of Hoffman Estates, Illinois and Katherine (Charles) Lasker of Eau Claire, Wisconsin and many friends here in Santa Rosa. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 4325 Mayette Ave, Santa Rosa.
