John Burt died, at the skilled nursing facility at Spring Lake Village, Santa Rosa, with his beloved companion, Marjorie Bailey at his side, after a fall nearly a month earlier. John was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, to Professor Alfred Leroy Burt and Dorothy Duff Burt. In 1930 his family, which included three sisters, moved to Minnesota where his father taught history, specializing in Canadian history, at the University of Minnesota. He attended Upper Canada College, a private high school, in Toronto, Canada. He earned three degrees from the University of Minnesota: a Bachelor's of Aeronautical Engineering, and Bachelor's and Master's of Mechanical Engineering. John married Barbara Jean Barnard, a childhood sweetheart, on October 20, 1945 in San Francisco. After three years in the Navy, he worked for over 35 years as a professional engineer: eight with the Navy at Bremerton, WA, and Oakland, CA; five with the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory in Berkeley; the remainder with private corporations in Boston and retiring in San Francisco. In retirement in Walnut Creek for 13 years, he led St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, Danville, commitment to Loaves & Fishes, a meal program for the needy. For over 12 years he worked with the incarcerated, helping them to read; and for ten years he tutored students at Diablo Valley Jr. College in mathematics. In 1998 he moved to Spring Lake Village, Santa Rosa, with Barbara, where he served on numerous committees, played bridge, called bingo, took trips and made many friends. He is preceded in death by his wife Barbara, and his three sisters: Forrie Johnson, Mary Leinback and Joan Jenness. He is survived by his son, Thomas and his wife Katherine; by his daughter Catherine Mazuroski and her husband Mark, and his grandson Skye Robert Mazuroski. His ashes were scattered off the coast of Marin County by the Neptune Society of Northern California. John Burt's memorial service will be held June 21st at 3:00 p.m. at the Spring Lake Village Chapel, 5555 Montgomery Drive, Santa Rosa, CA. It will be followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Boy Scouts of America.
