Kevin Coates, son of Paul and Kate Coates, passed away unexpectedly on February 24, 2014. Kevin was just a few days shy of his 29th birthday. Born in Santa Rosa and raised in Calistoga with his two brothers, Bobby and Adam Coates, Kevin is remembered by many. In his 28 years, Kevin built the foundation of a fulfilling and faithful life. Kevin played for the Calistoga Wildcats football team, ran track, became an Eagle Scout with Troop 18, and graduated from Calistoga High School as valedictorian in 2003. He worked summers for his dad's construction company, and was the envy of many, including his brothers, driving a red 1969 Camaro he rebuilt. Kevin met the love of his life, Erin, while studying engineering at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. They both went on to earn masters' degrees from Purdue University, a top school in their field. Kevin proposed to Erin in a gondola in Venice, Italy, and the two were married in 2009. They returned to California and built a home together in southern California. Kevin earned his professional license in civil engineering and worked for an engineering firm where he was respected for his strong work ethic and exceptional skill. Kevin was loved for his deep character and sense of humor. He was both an outdoorsman and a family man. Kevin enjoyed weightlifting, running, golfing, camping, and going to the beach with friends. He and his wife visited his family often and traveled the world with them. As his last greatest gift, Kevin was a generous organ donor. Kevin is survived by his loving wife, Erin Coates and his unborn daughter due in May. He is also survived by his parents, Paul and Kate Coates, of Calistoga, his brothers, Bobby Coates, wife Kristen, of Elk Grove, and Adam Coates, wife Lisa, of Bloomington Indiana, his grandmothers Margaret Schirle and Minnie Coates, both of Santa Rosa, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family members. A memorial service was held for Kevin near his home in Southern California. A Celebration of Life service for friends and family will be held in Calistoga in July after the birth of his daughter. In lieu of flowers, the family has established a memorial fund at West America Bank, 1110 Washington Street, Calistoga, CA 94515 for the care, raising, and education of Kevin's daughter.
