Passed away on February 26, 2012 in Santa Rosa with his family and dear friends at his side. He was born May 23, 1951 in San Francisco to Michael and Cynthia Avanche and was raised and attended school there. Sonny was a member of the Sea Scouts where he learned to love all things nautical. He served his country during the Vietnam War with the Navy, and was stationed on the USS Coral Sea in the Gulf of Tonkin. Upon returning, Sonny worked at the SF Veterans Hospital before fulfilling his lifelong goal of becoming a firefighter with the San Francisco Fire Department where he proudly served for 25 years. He spent many hours with his main passion of fishing, be it in the SF Bay, Pacific Ocean, Delta, and any lake or stream he could find. Family and friends have many wonderful memories of spending time with Sonny playing volleyball, fishing, camping, four wheeling, and cooking for all. Sonny is survived by his wife, Debra; daughter, Renee; son, Griffin; granddaughter, Vienna; and brother "JR," all of Santa Rosa, along with his beloved mother, Cynthia and special Aunt Auring in the Philippines, and countless special friends, many of whom are his brothers at the SFFD. Services will be held March 9th at 2:00 p.m. at St. Rose Church in Santa Rosa. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the SF Fire Dept Toy Program or the California Nature Conservancy. Santa Rosa Mortuary Eggen & Lance Chapel, 545-3747.
