Passed on June 14, 2014 at the age of 76 in Santa Rosa, CA. Born in Ukiah, CA on June 17, 1937 to the late Verner and Elinor Wicklund. A 1955 graduate of Santa Rosa High School and 1960 graduate of San Francisco State. Bob attended Naval Office Candidate School at Newport, Rhode Island and was commissioned in 1961, following his older brother Richard John Wicklund into military service. Throughout his 30 year career in the U.S. Navy, he served as Weapons Officer or commander of several ships, including the USS Goldsborough, USS Carpenter, USS Fox, USS Ouellet, and the USS Bigelow. Throughout his life, he travelled the world, visiting Europe, Asia, Australia and many other ports of call. He received the Bronze Star with Combat V for his work with the Amphibious Task Force in Vietnam. He was also awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and Defense Superior Service Medal for his work with the Joint Special Operations Command. He retired in March of 1991 at his final rank of Captain and returned to Santa Rosa. His professional memberships included the Military Officers Association, the Navy League (serving four times as its president) and was a Life member of the National Rifle Association. He actively supported the Point Reyes Coast Guard station. He was a member of the Foothills Community Church. Survived by his sister-in-law Doralyn Wicklund, nephew Douglas Wicklund and nieces Dawn and Dorann Wicklund of Virginia. He is also survived by his uncle William Montgomery of Ukiah, CA and his aunts Evelyn Montgomery of San Diego, CA and Louise Montgomery of Eureka, CA. He is survived by many other family and friends, both in California and around the country. He will be remembered for his recounting of his life adventures and his literary interest. He was always willing to converse about history and shared generously with ours. He loved spending time with friends and family, especially his grand-nephews Jeremiah and James Wicklund.
