Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Jess F. Stanley, 86, of Colonial Heights, one of the "Greatest Generation" passed away on Thursday, April 25, 2013. He was the son of the late Junius and Rubye Legette Stanley. Mr. Stanley served in the Pacific during World War II as a sailor.

He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1950 and joined the U.S. Air Force to serve in the Korean War. He served in Korea, Vietnam and during the Cold War, where he was awarded numerous service ribbons and six medals for outstanding service, including the Bronze Star. He was a member of the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1978.
Mr. Stanley is survived by; his loving wife, of 64 years, Dorothy S. Stanley; a son, Donald B. Stanley of Texas; daughter, Susan L. Egbert of Utah; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jenny Wall of North Carolina. Services are private.
