BLISS, JAMES MOTT (JAKE) MD, 37, of Santa Barbara, CA, died November 10, 2012, of complications from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease). He leaves his wife, Dr. Laurel A. Bliss, and his daughter, Devon A. Bliss, of Santa Barbara, CA. Jake was born in Rehoboth, MA, the son of Dr. Thomas F. Bliss and the late Josselyn Hallowell Bliss. He attended Gordon School, and graduated from Moses Brown School, 1993. He received a BA in American Studies, Yale University, 1998; MD, Tulane University, 2012. He completed his Orthopedic Surgery residency at Brown University, 2007; a fellowship in orthopedic trauma, Brown University, 2008; and a fellowship in total joint replacements at the Scripps Clinic, 2009, San Diego, CA. He then joined the medical staff of the Sansum Clinic, Santa Barbara, CA, where he specialized in complex joint replacement surgery. During his career he garnered the respect and admiration of all who had the privilege to know him. Jake was a lifelong Quaker who generously donated his time to helping the homeless of Santa Barbara and migrant Haitian workers in the Dominican Republic. Besides his wife, daughter, and father, Jake is also survived by his brothers and sisters: Dr. Molly Bliss and husband, Jim Wolf, and daughter, Josselyn, of Lebanon, NJ; Tim Bliss and wife, Jennifer, and their three children, Caitlin, Megan, and Sam of Merrimack, NH; Anna Bliss and husband, Dr. Michael Schaffer, of Providence, RI; and Ned Bliss of Cambridge, MA. He leaves many beloved uncles, aunts, and cousins as well. A memorial service for Jake will be held at Alumni Hall, Moses Brown School, 250 Lloyd Avenue, Providence, RI, at 10:30 AM on Sunday Nov 18, 2012.
