John R. Smith John R. Smith, 81, of Mercersburg, passed away at 11:50 p.m. January 17, 2014, at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born June 16, 1932, at Cove Gap, he was a son of the late George and Beulah E. Walck Smith. He was employed at the former Lowengart Company of Mercersburg for over 40 years. Following his retirement, he worked at American Legion #517, Mercersburg, and later was caretaker at Mercersburg Sportsman's Association for 3 years. He enjoyed watching sports on TV, car shows, and wood working. He was a member of Charlestown United Methodist Church of Cove Gap, Mercersburg Sportsman's Association and VFW #6241 of Mercersburg. John was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. His medals include a Combat Infantry Badge and a Korean Service Medal W/3 Bronze Service Stars. Surviving family include his wife, Lucille Z. Reeder Smith, whom he married July 10, 1954; a daughter, Sharon S. Smith of Chambersburg; a son, Rick A. and wife Janet Smith of Mercersburg; a granddaughter, Lynnea and husband Charles Summerscales of Harrisburg; and two great-granddaughters, Calliope and Cordelia Summerscales of Harrisburg. John was preceded in death by siblings, Franklin Smith, James Smith and Doris Layton. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, Inc., Mercersburg, with Pastor Michael Purnell officiating. Interment will be at Stenger Hill Cemetery, Ft. Loudon.
