Luther M. Black, Jr. Luther M. "Pap" Black, Jr., age 90, of Chambersburg, passed away on Thursday morning, March 27, 2014 at Chambersburg Hospital. Born March 23, 1924 in McConnellsburg, he was a son of the late Luther M. and Pearl Barton Black. His wife, Frances McClure Black preceded him in death on March 22, 2005. A World War II Navy Veteran, Luther served honorably from 1943 until 1945. He then worked at Letterkenny Army Depot as a Combat Inspector until his retirement in 1978 after 33 years of service. After his retirement, "Toot" drove a school bus, then worked as a maintenance man at the Franklin County Prison. "June" enjoyed going for breakfast at the Greenvillage Restaurant, Texas Lunch, and the Sunset Diner where the staff all knew him as "Pappy". He walked regularly at the Chambersburg Mall and throughout his life enjoyed doing neighborhood handyman jobs, bowling at Lincoln Lanes, and shooting pool at Roman's. Luther held several nicknames including: "Pap, Toot, June, Joe and Stoop". "Joe" was a member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir. "Pap" is survived by two children, Terry L. Black and wife Teresa "Terri" of Chambersburg, and Susanne G. "Sue" Smith and husband Ronnie of Upper Strasburg; four grandchildren, Ryan Black and wife Kimberly Grant-Black of Long Beach, CA, Alex Black and fiance Ellen Bert of Chambersburg, Kelly Watson and husband Chad of Shippensburg, and Trevor Short and wife Wendy of Chambersburg and their two children Hailey and Dylan. He was preceded in death by a son, Luther R. Black; four sisters; and three brothers. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Park Avenue United Methodist Church, 125 Park Avenue, Chambersburg, PA 17201. Rev. Suzanne Elliott will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. A private interment will be held at Norland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Park Avenue United Methodist Church at the above address or to Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 5051 Letterkenny Road West, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
