Beverly J. Pillers

June 17, 1929

January 15, 2014

Native Nevadan Beverly J. Pillers, 84, passed away on January 15, 2014 after suffering a stroke. Beverly was born in Tonopah, Nevada, June 17, 1929 to Frances and Frank Richardson. She attended school in Reno and San Diego, and graduated from Reno High in 1946. She married her high school sweetheart, Ralph L. Pillers, on October 1, 1946. The marriage of 64 years started with a chance meeting, riding with some friends delivering newspapers in a 1929 Cadillac phaeton convertible sedan. Ralph and Beverly spent the first 10 years of marriage in San Diego, where Ralph worked for Standard Stations, Inc., and Beverly worked for Convair. It was there that their first two sons were born. In 1957 they relocated to Tonopah, where they remained until their retirement move to Spanish Springs in 1998. In Tonopah, the family grew by three more children. To provide space for the growing family, they bought Tonopah's most notable home, known as The Castle, and spent over 30 years enjoying it and retaining its uniqueness. It is now one of Nevada's historical monuments.

Beverly was quite a renaissance woman and held many different jobs in her lifetime. She worked as a draftsman, bookkeeper, dealer, pit boss, miner, administrative assistant, journalist, and store clerk. Beverly's love of work was founded on her relationships with colleagues and co-workers. Beverly was an avid reader, often consuming several books a week. She was a fierce Scrabble competitor and enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. She raised her five children on "wit and grit," often having to make do with very little during the most difficult economic times. She made life an adventure for her family and felt her greatest accomplishment was simple: her children.

Beverly is survived by sons Jamie (Mandy), Mickey (Laurie), Joel (Mona), Russell (Vicki), daughter Elizabeth Wright (Gary), grandchildren Seth and Katie Pillers, Abby and Brandon Wright, Lucia Pillers, and Adele, Ellyn and Benjamin Pillers. She is also survived by three sisters, Candy Metcher, Natalie Morley and Pam Godfrey. A family celebration of Beverly's life will be held at a future date.
