Carol Lupia died peacefully in her Reno home with her husband Archy at her side. Carol was born in Flandreau, SD to Frank and Grace Cherney. One of five children, Carol grew up in Flandreau, graduated from the local high school and went on to attend the University of South Dakota where she majored in speech and education, graduating with a B.A.
She taught school in Onawa, Iowa, then moved to San Francisco where she worked for Macy's and met Lt. (USN) Archy Lupia; after a 6 month courtship, they were married in Washington, D.C.
Carol is survived by her husband and soul mate of 66 years, Archy and their four loving children Christie Gescheider (Bruce) of Reno, NV, Carol Emily Smith (Scott) of Edina, MN, David Lupia (Denise) of Ridgefield, CT and Jonathan Lupia (Peeb) of Durango, CO, six accomplished grandchildren and 3 beautiful great grandchildren, her brother Joe Cherney of Garden Grove, CA and several nieces and nephews.
Carol embraced life with gusto -- growing up she was a daredevil who liked fast cars and motorcycles, earned her pilot's license as a teenager and was a DJ for her college radio station. As a navy wife, she moved 15 times, setting up house and raising their four children while Archy was often at sea. She earned her Master's in special education when her children were older and spent many years as a dedicated special education teacher in Fairfax County, Virginia, where she was awarded the Special Education Teacher of the Year. Despite her frequent moves, she found time for many hobbies, excelling in all of them, but the ones most appreciated by her family involved food - she grew her own veggies and was a gourmet cook.
Her children and grandchildren were her greatest joy and she and Archy were both lovingly involved and supportive in their lives.
While we miss her terribly, we know that she is now with Jesus, watching over the loved ones she left behind, and that one day we'll be together again.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Moody County Historical Society, P.O. Box 25, Flandreau, SD 57028, or to
A celebration of Carol's life will be held on Saturday, March 2 at 3:30 pm at the Five Star Premier Residence, 3201 Plumas St., Reno.
