John Matthew (Jack) Callahan Jr. Obituary
John (Jack) Matthew Callahan Jr

John (Jack) Matthew Callahan Jr. 81, was born September 9, 1932 and peacefully passed on June 9, 2014 surrounded by the love of his family. Jack was born and raised in Reno, Nevada; loving son of John (Jack) Callahan Sr. and Ilda Spalding-Callahan. He was the eldest of five children, having been predeceased by his brother Phillip, parents and wife Annie. Jack is survived by his siblings Sharon Callahan, Ray (Amy) Callahan, Dennis Callahan, his children John (Tina) Callahan III, Craig (Echo) Callahan, Sanduska (John Mummert) Schopp, stepson Rick (Dawn) Andrade as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Jack was a member of the original pioneering Callahan family of Virginia City. A heritage he loved and respected. As a young man, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Some of his fondest memories were fishing at Eagle Lake with his Grandpa Spalding. He continued to enjoy travel and the outdoors into his later years. Jack attended St. Thomas Aquinas where he was an altar boy, going on to play football and graduate from Bishop Manogue High School. Upon graduation, Jack enlisted in the United States Navy, stationed at Point Mugu Naval Base, California during the Korean War. With an honorable discharge, Jack returned to Reno and began a career in gaming, spanning many years in both Reno and Las Vegas. Following his retirement, Jack lived the remainder of his lifetime on Mount Rose; content in the childhood home he helped to build as a young man. Having watched his parents work so very hard to be able to create their family home, it was a place he loved and respected. Jack felt blessed for the closeness of family and friends. His greatest source of pride was the incredible people his children grew to be. He loved his family beyond measure and would often say he couldn't be any more fortunate a man.

Jack was very much loved and will be sorely missed.

Services will be held at Our Lady of the Snows, 1138 Wright St, Reno, NV 89509 on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 11:00 am. Burial to immediately follow at Callahan's Whispering Pines Cemetery. Reception details will be announced at the service.
