World War II veteran, Leon Manning, 96 passed away on April 14th 2014 at Sun City Center, Florida. He was born Nov. 10th, 1917 in Astoria, New York to William H Manning and Addie Mayva Parker. Leon was preceded in death by his wife Elsie, one sister, Irma Pluta, and 3 brothers, Howard, Lester, and Victor Manning. He is survived by a daughter Barbara Floto and son-in-law Dennis of Sun City Center, Florida, Two grandchildren, Joseph Legocki of Belfast, Maine, and Anne Dixon of Reno, Nevada. Also surviving are 4 great-grandchildren, Devin and Logan Dixon of Reno, Kimber Wright, of Reno, and Tommy Legocki of Searsport, Maine. Also surviving is sister-in-law Evelyn Wagner of Reno, Nevada.
His military service also included the Army Air Corps and the Korean Conflict.
Leon, a Senior Master-Sergeant in the United States Air Force, moved with his family from Itazuke Japan to Reno in 1964. Leon worked at Stead Air Force Base and Fallon Naval Station until his honorable discharge of 26 years of military service in October 1968. After retirement Leon and wife Elsie became active in Washoe County Community Concert Association, Reno Little Theatre, Assistance League of Northern Nevada, Nevada Repertory Club, and both Leon and Elsie were charter members of Nevada Opera Guild. He was also an honorary member of America Association of University Women. His hobbies included photography, genealogy, and he was an active volunteer in many of Reno's cultural events. Wife Elsie passed away in 1995 and Leon moved to Florida in 2008 where he continued to reside until his death.
Cremation has taken place and in June of this year his ashes will be laid to rest in Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley, Nevada beside his wife.
