Michael "Mike" Irvine, 70, died Monday, August 4, 2014 in Redding, California from complications related to colon cancer. Mike spent several weeks in hospice care prior to his death, and died peacefully.

He leaves his daughter, Sarah Irvine; son Brian Irvine and his wife Katharine; and two grandsons, Alex and Cooper Irvine. Mike also leaves his brother Fleet and his wife Ruth; brother Allen and his wife Roblee; sister Juanita and husband Curtis Hill; along with many nieces and nephews. He also leaves Milton Finger, husband of his sister Marian, who died in 2010.

Mike was born in San Francisco, California on November 9, 1943. He and his parents, Fleet and Esther Irvine and four siblings lived in San Francisco until 1954, when they moved to Redding, California. Mike graduated in 1961 from Shasta High School, where he starred in football and track and set several school records.

After graduating from Chico State, Mike served as an officer in Vietnam in 1968-69 in Delta Co., 2nd Bn., 8th Cav. (Airborne), 1st Cav. Div. (Airmobile), and received the Bronze Star for valor.

Following his military service, Mike earned a Masters degree from the University of Northern Colorado, then moved to Reno, Nevada, where he worked at Reno High School as a librarian for twenty years. After retiring as an educator, Mike returned to Redding and lived there until his passing.

Mike is remembered for his sense of humor, loyalty as a friend and for his love of the outdoors. He volunteered for many years at VFW Post 1934 in Redding. He will be missed.
