AVONNE VIRGINIA DRAKE, 97 MACHESNEY PARK - Avonne Virginia Drake, 97, of Machesney Park was born June 12, 1916, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Glen and Lina (Powell) Dauenbaugh, and died Aug. 30, 2013, in Rockford Memorial Hospital. Avonne spent her early years on her parents' homestead in Effie, Minnesota. She was the oldest of 10 children and learned very early to care for others. Avonne graduated from Rockford Central High School in 1932, having skipped ahead in Minnesota's one-room schools. She received a full scholarship for Beloit College and loved 2 years of study. She then married James, and they moved to Champaign, IL, where James got an engineering education at the University of Illinois. When they moved back to the area Avonne became a full-time mother and homemaker. Six children were born from 1941 to 1950. Patricia Drake Johnson, Kenneth, Steven, Douglas, Bradley (Cindy) and David (Roxanne). Avonne was a dedicated wife and mother who worked endlessly indoors and outdoors to care for the large family. She enjoyed Sewing Club, Outlook Club, Book Club at North Suburban Library, and United Methodist Women's activities, and she was a Boy Scout "mom". The Baby Wellness Clinic located at Evans United Methodist Church in the 1970's was of particular interest to her, and she volunteered with many other church friends. She remained active in Evans UMC in Machesney Park where she and James were charter members, and she taught Sunday School there for many years. James died in 1992, and Avonne learned to live alone. She remained a voracious reader who would tolerate good fiction, but had more interest in non-fiction. She had a stroke in 2009 and became homebound, but visitors and books were still an important part of her world. Her caregiver, Lyudmyla, became a dear friend during Avonne's final four years. Her help is deeply appreciated by the entire family. Avonne is survived by five children; twelve grandchildren; twenty-six great- grandchildren; two great- great-grandchildren; sisters, Jean Stevens of Big Fork, Minnesota, Rose Daniels (Lowell) of Machesney Park; and brother, Delbert Dauenbaugh of Rockford. She has many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband; son, Kenneth; parents; sister, Maxine Kolm; and brothers, Bryce, Pierre, Lee, Paul and Thomas (Martha).
