CHARLES E. 'ED' HYLAND, 85 ROCKFORD - Charles E. "Ed" Hyland, 85, of Rockford died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at home. Ed was born Sept. 3, 1927, in Cherry Valley, son of Charles J. and Myrtle (Horan) Hyland. Ed served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was invited back to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Ed graduated from Rockford East High School in 1945, and Northwestern University in 1950. Ed married the love of his life, Phyllis McDougall in 1954. After working in Wisconsin, Ed and Phyllis returned to Rockford where Ed worked in the home building industry and he and Phyllis raised their five children. He operated Hyland Homes with the familiar four leaf clover on his for sale signs. His optimistic approach to life and his faith have inspired his family and friends and will live on. Ed was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Forest Hills Country Club, Troon Country Club in Arizona and the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his five children, Norma (Steven) Ericson of Downers Grove, Cynthia (Michael) Emer of Woodbury, Minn., Eileen (Michael) Harner of Rockford, Charles (Liz) Hyland of Leawood, Kan., and Philip Hyland of South Carolina; 15 grandchildren, Lissa, Molly and Edward Ericson, Christine and Sarah Emer, Benjamin, Kathryn and Erin Harner, Courtney, Andrew, Clare and Luke Hyland, and Chase, Shana and Lea Hyland; sisters, Kay Byrne, Eileen Doig and Margaret Byers; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ed was predeceased by wife; grandchildren, Haley and Rachel Hyland; and sister, Rose Sheets. Special thanks to all those who loved Ed and cared for him in his last days. Mass of Christian Burial at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 4401 Highcrest Road, Rockford, with visitation from 12:30 p.m. to service time. Burial in Calvary Catholic Cemetery. There will be a Celebration of Life at Forest Hills Country Club, 5135 Forest Hills Road, Rockford, IL 61114, after the burial service where a buffet dinner will be served.
