CORWIN M. 'CORK' HOLMES, 73 ROCKFORD - On Saturday, August 23, 2014 Cork packed his gear in his backpack, loaded it in his canoe, and went home. He loved this planet and while on his earth walk he did the following. Cork was born March 8, 1941 in Champaign, IL., the son of George Corwin and Anna Claire (Mittendorf) Holmes. Graduated from Champaign High School and attended University of Illinois. Member of Delta Chi Fraternity, sang in U of I Concert Choir, dance band and Jazz drummer. Served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Cork was active in Boy Scouts of American, troop, camp staff, and national councils. Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow. He married Carol Ann Weinreich on May 19, 1967. He retired after thirty-three years from Taylor Company (formally Taylor Freezer) in Rockton, IL. Member of Tom Brown, Jr and Joel Hardin Tracking Associations, Co-Founder of Medicine Hawk Wilderness Skills of Wisconsin and instructor for twenty-five years; Medicine Pipe Carrier, Leader of Vision Quest. Cork was a 4th degree Black-belt and an instructor at Rockford Academy of Tae Kwon Do. Friend of Bill W for thirty five years and he loved to show the beauty of nature in his photographs. The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Sreenivasappa and staff of OSF St. Anthony Medical Center for Cancer Care, in addition the staff of Northern Illinois Hospice for all their support and care. Survivors include wife Carol; sons Michael (Charlotta Lindvall) Weinreich, Christopher (Valerie) Weinreich, and Donald C Rehg; grandchildren Aaron, Erica, and Lukas Weinreich, Nicholas, Matthew, Mitchell Weinreich; sister Jan (Les Etheridge) Holmes; sisters in laws Norma McPherron and Joan (Wayne) Macklin, and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, August 28 at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, Mulford Chapel. 1860 S. Mulford Rd., Rockford, IL., with the Rev.
