EDWIN JOSEPH SCHELMAN, 71 ROCKTON - Edwin Joseph Schelman, 71, of Rockton, IL, died Thursday, September 12, 2013, in his home. He was born on September 24, 1941, in Beloit, WI, the son of Elmer and Marion (Hertzfeldt) Schelman. Edwin was a 1959 graduate of Beloit Memorial High School and later Abacus IT Inc. in Janesville. He married Linda Rawson on July 6, 1965 in Beloit. Edwin was a veteran in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Goose Bay Labrador and Ft. Churchill Hudson Bay. He was formerly employed by Sears Automotive, Bryden Motors, Prudential Insurance, LSI, and was part owner of Gentlemen Threads. Edwin was a member of the Beloit Evening Lions Club, Rockton American Legion Post #332, Top of the Town Ballroom Dancing Club, Kruger Golf Club, and a 45 year member of the 500 Card Club. Edwin was very involved in aviation and flew solo when he was only 16 years old under the tutelage of Russell Van Galder. He met his airport buddies at the Beloit Airport every Friday for coffee. Edwin and Linda enjoyed traveling to such places as Mexico, Europe, Greece, Crete, Hawaii and frequently to Portland to visit their daughter, Leigh. Edwin was a handyman who loved fixing things around the house and helping out others. He enjoyed theatre. He and Linda enjoyed attending the Beloit Civic Theatre and Beloit College Theatre. They and special friends made summer trips to the New American Theatre in Spring Green, WI. Edwin's favorite musical was "Cats." He loved cars including NASCAR and Indy, traveling to the Indianapolis 500 for 40 years. Edwin enjoyed vacations that involved driving across the United States. Survivors include his wife, Linda Schelman of Rockton, IL; son, Jay Schelman of Chicago, IL; daughter, Leigh (Paul di Napoli) Schelman of Portland, OR; brother, Bud (Irene) Schelman of New Berlin, WI; brother-in-law, Tom (Carla) Rawson of Richland Center, WI; sisters-in-law, Susan (Earl) Shoemaker of Overland Park, KS, Cathryn (Frank) Harrington of Glenwood Springs, CO and Carrie Rawson of Monroe, WI; numerous nieces and nephews, and many wonderful and special friends. He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Mary Jo; brother-in-law, Roger Rawson; sister-in-law, Mary Williams; and favorite aunt, Madeline "Sally" Olson. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, September 16, 2013, in Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 749 Bluff Street, Beloit, WI, with Reverend Eric Jelinek officiating. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:45 a.m. in the church. Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home and Crematorium, 2355 Cranston Rd., Beloit, WI, assisted the family with the arrangements. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Platteville, WI. Memorials may be given to Our Saviors Lutheran Church and the Beloit Evening Lions Club.
